WILDLIFE SAFARI
ROYAL CHITWAN NATIONAL PARK SAFARIS
INTRODUCTION
This national park is located in the mid-west Terai region. Comprising 368 square kilometers, it was officially gazetted in 1976. Including a section of the Geruwa branch of the Kamali River and part of the southern face of the Siwalik (Churia) hills, the park consists of fairly flat, alluvial land. Sal forest covers over seventy percent of the land area while the rest is open grassland, savannah and riverine forest. This park is a very good habitat for the tiger, supporting Nepal's second largest population (a larger population being found in Royal Chitwan National Park). About 32 species of mammals, including the Gangetic dolphin, swamp deer and elephant, have been recorded; about 250 species of birds have also been recoreded in the area. A small population of Garial crocodiles still survives in the Karnali river along with the masher fish.
BARDYA NATIONAL PARK COST: USD 350 PER PERSON including round trip airfare
NOTE: Flight duration 1 hour 10 minutes, 531 km away from Kathmandu - 12 hours
ACTIVITIES
A typical two-nights/three-days jungle safari consists of the following activities.
ELEPHANT RIDE: The best and safest way to view wild animals is from the top of an elephant. Usually a number of elephants enter the jungle together.
BOAT RIDES: There are crocodiles in the jungle rivers. Riding in a canoe allows you see them close-up as they are sunning on the sand bands. You will see a lot of water birds too.
JEEP RIDE: Driving around the jungle in a jeep is another good (although noisy) way to observe its denizens. (Seasonal)
JUNGLE WALK: Walking in the forest puts you in the thick of things. Please note that it can be dangerous.
BIRD WATCHING: A walkabout to view the colorful jungle birds is fun, even if you are no great enthusiast.
VILLAGE TOUR: The Tharus are indigenous people of the Terai plains. You can visit a Tharu village by ox-cart or on foot to observe their lifestyle.
CULTURAL PROGRAM: At the end of the day, you will be entertained by a traditional Tharu dance around a campfire.
